Sunday Scoop

Hooray! I'm linking up with Teaching Trio for my second Sunday Scoop.
My week began like this...
I am rethinking my plans AGAIN considering all of our snow days and the upcoming week filled with meetings, testing, and due dates...so tomorrow we'll review multiplication and division.

I HAVE to check up on my sons, and make sure that their college applications have all been sent. February 1st is another deadline. Yes, I will have two going off to school in the fall. I can't help myself...

View from the Treetops

Hello,

View from the treetops yesterday morning….
Here is the view from the treetops this morning….
And the view out the front door…
Oh my, we have a ton of snow. Let’s just say I’m thankful to have 5 sons to shovel. They’re not awake so the grumbling is yet to begin. But I’m hoping the fact that we still have electricity will put them in a good mood.

I am working on some things to use with my students... if we ever get back to school. My plan is to have a day reviewing multiplication word problems and division. Naturally I’m sticking with a winter theme.
Word Problems
Division Practice
Stay tuned…I’ll be back tomorrow with more from the Treetops.

Valentine's Day

Hello from Treetop Creations,

My goal was to do my first Blog Post by February 1st, and that happened ahead of schedule thanks to Jolene at Paisley n’ Polkadots Blog Designs.

My second goal was to complete several products for the upcoming February holidays. I have two rounding activities with a Valentine’s Day theme available on TPT. Rounding is so much more fun when it comes in the shape of a heart! I also wanted to share my Valentine’s Day Bag. I’m including a sample in this post. Students have a chance to review math properties and fact families all while designing a cute Valentine bag for collecting goodies. Each student receives a template with the hearts, instructions, and a name tag. You just need to provide large lunch bags. I’ve also included an activity sheet for reviewing the properties, and a homework pass for you to give students on Valentine's Day. So, if you are short on time, this products provides all that you need. Here is a sample…

Thank you for stopping by, and have a great week!

Properties of Multiplication and Division

Well, it was fun being back at school this week…once I got over the initial shock! In math, we spent some time reviewing the properties of multiplication and addition. I used my TPT Properties Resource to review with my students. This resource includes the identity property (addition/multiplication), zero property, commutative property (addition/multiplication), associative property (addition/multiplication), and the distributive property. You can pick and choose the properties you want to focus on with your students.

The first day I posted signs for four of the properties, passed out the equations, and sent students off to find the correct corner. Students helped each other, and the discussions were on target. The next day we did a quick “quiz, quiz, trade” to review the properties as part of our morning meeting. The following day students completed the properties review sheet for morning work, and we looked at some non-examples. On the review sheet, students had to fill-in-the blank to complete each equation and then color the examples following a key to identify the properties. Initially, some students were solving the equations, but you could hear the buzz as they realized they could use the associative and commutative properties to help fill in the blanks.

We did not spend much time on the activities, but the short review seemed to help their understanding of the properties. The sorting cards/mat and exit tickets will be one of my stations next week. I hope you have a great week!
